Texas School Districts - Region 6

About Region 6 Schools

The school districts of Texas Region 6 are located across 15 counties in the piney woods region of southeast Texas, including Houston, Polk, Austin, Milam, and Montgomery Counties. Although the total area of the region is more than 12,000 square miles, the central offices are located in the city of Huntsville, TX in Walker County, approximately 60 miles north of downtown Houston. Region 6 includes 57 school districts, including Conroe ISD, Huntsville ISD, Magnolia ISD, Montgomery ISD, and Shepherd ISD. The region also includes a number of private and charter schools, including the Brazos School for Creativity/Inquiry Charter and the Heritage Champions Academy Charter. In total, more than 150,000 students attend Region 6 Schools, which employ more than 21,000 educators.

More than 300 employees oversee the daily operations of Region 6 schools. An eight-member Board of Directors, chaired by Dr. James Stegall, works with the Texas Education Agency to ensure a quality education for every student.

To help provide students with this quality education, Region 6 administrators have established a number of goals that they hope to accomplish by the year 2010. By that year they hope to help all students in Region 6 meet state and national standards, to educate these students in a learning environment free of drugs and violence, to provide access to technology services to all personnel, and to fill some of the staffing shortages in districts across the region. These and other steps will strengthen Region 6 schools as they continue to strive to provide an excellent education for all who enter into their classrooms.

Teaching in Texas Region 6

If you are interested in teaching in one of Region 6 schools or in any school in the state of Texas, you must have a Texas teaching certificate or enroll in an alternative certification program that will help you become certified. A number of positions are currently available in Region 6, especially for bilingual instructors. Starting salaries vary by district but typically range from $30,000 to $45,000 per year in Region 6.

Region 6 provides a wide variety of teaching opportunities. A number of exciting, fast-growing districts are now hiring to keep up with demand, but for those who prefer more of a small-town feel, a number of smaller schools and districts also continue to need quality educators. In some situations, teachers will have the opportunity to introduce their eager students to technology and prepare them to participate in all the excitement that the world has to offer, while in others teachers will have the unique opportunity to impact the lives of struggling students from disadvantaged families. In all cases, teachers have the privilege and the responsibility of shaping the future of the next generation.

Alternative Certification Programs

If you would like to become a teacher in Region 6 but do not have a teaching certificate, you must enroll in an alternative certification program to become certified. One attractive option is the program we offer - Web-Centric Alternative Certification Program (WCACP). Our online program gives you the freedom and flexibility to work on curriculum at your own pace. The typical amount of time to complete the curriculum is 3-4 months, followed by additional coursework during your one-year teaching internship.

As the population of Texas and the Houston area continues to grow, schools across the state continue to need quality teaches who are willing to invest in the lives of their students. Thanks to alternative certification programs such as the WCACP, these teachers can be on their way to a classroom sooner than they ever dreamed possible!
