Candidates seeking admission to our alternative certification program must meet the following criteria:
1. A bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education 2. Grade Point Average of 2.5 or higher:
2.50 overall GPA (bachelor’s degree), or
2.50 GPA in the last 60 hours of coursework prior to graduation (bachelor’s degree)
*Coursework completed towards a Master’s Degree or post-baccalaureate will be considered if the content hours pertain to your certification area. These credits can serve to boost your GPA.
3. Screening for admission to include but not limited to college level skills in reading, oral and written communication, critical thinking, and mathematics.
If a teaching candidates content hour grades are not a B average in English and math, TASP/THEA scores, ACT/SAT scores, or GRE/GMAT scores may be utilized to demonstrate competency in reading, writing, and math.
4. Teaching candidate cannot be accepted if they have taught for three years on an emergency or probationary certificate in Texas.
5. Teaching candidates that are in their final semester of coursework can begin the alternative certification program on a provisional basis. A letter of completion from the Registrar or Academic Advisor must be received for admission. You will be eligible to begin the coursework and take your content exam while you are finishing the requirements for your degree.
6. Teaching candidates that graduated outside of the United States and U.S. Territories must:
Provide official transcript evaluated by a foreign credential evaluator. Transcripts from a foreign country will not be accepted.
