Region 13 - Comfort Independent School District

About Comfort ISD

Comfort Independent School District (ISD) is located in the community of Comfort, TX, which lies along Interstate 10, forty-five miles north of the city of San Antonio. Because this town, which rests in the hill country along the Guadalupe River, has a small population of only approximately 2,300 residents, Comfort ISD is also a small district with a familial feel. The district serves approximately 1,200 students in its elementary school, middle school, and high school.

Throughout the city’s history, the school system has always been an important part of life in Comfort. The city was established in 1854, and the first schoolhouse built two years later. In 1892 a three-room school building was constructed. This historic edifice remains a part of Comfort ISD culture, although in 2001-02 it was remodeled and now serves as the building for the district’s Information and Technology Department.

All three schools in Comfort ISD have currently been rated “academically acceptable” by the Texas Education Agency’s Academic Excellence Indicator System. In most subjects they received “recognized” or “exemplary” ratings, and they continue to improve each year. The schools have each also received recognition by the Gold Performance Acknowledgment, which measures factors not included in the Academic Excellence Indicator System’s ratings. Most of these acknowledgements have come in the areas of mathematics and reading/ELA.

The opportunities for Comfort ISD students continue to increase every year. During the 2007-08 school year, more than thirty students at Comfort High School participated in dual enrollment courses that allowed them to earn credit in up to four college classes. Comfort ISD was represented on the state and national level when Mrs. Dottie Linder went to Washington this past school year to participate as one of 500 school nurses in a three-day internship program and to meet with congressmen and senators on Capitol Hill. The Comfort ISD athletic teams have also had tremendous success in the past school year. Although the district is small, the future for students in Comfort ISD looks brighter than ever!
