Due to a mandate from SBEC/TEA there is an
additional step in becoming certified to teach Special Education in the
state of Texas. This rule specifies in order for WCACP to recommend a
teaching candidate for their Probationary Certificate in Special
Education, you must pass a corresponding content test in addition to the
EC-12 Special Education content area.
The specific content exam required will depend on the grade level you
want to teach:
Elementary Special Ed (pre-k through 4th grade) – you will need to pass
the EC-12 Special Ed and EC-4 Generalist or EC-6 Generalist exam
Middle School/Junior High Special Ed (4th through 8th grade) – you will
need to pass the EC-12 Special Ed and 4-8 Generalist exam
High School Special Ed (9th through 12th grade) – you will need to pass
the EC-12 Special Ed exam; you will also need to pass the EC-4
Generalist, EC-6 Generalist, or 4-8 Generalist exam (district may
