The State of Texas is in the process of changing the teacher certification examination program from the Examination for the Certification of Educators in Texas (ExCET) test to the Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES) test. The State Board for Educator Certification is planning to phase out the ExCET test by 2006. The ExCET exam has been the certification test prospective teachers have had to take to become a certified teacher since 1986. The TExES test was introduced in the fall of 2004 and currently there are 40 new standards-based TExES certificates available. Prospective teachers will be required to take at least two certification tests (PPR ands content area) prior to being recommended to the state for certification.
The redesign of the ExCET certification test is an integral part of the State Board for Educator Certification plan for the k-16 initiative. One of the first steps to the development of the TExES test was to develop new standards for Texas public school teachers. The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) standards for curriculum were developed. The development of these new tests and procedures has been a collaborative effort by many experts from all education areas in the state.
